I have this game I want to test out. In it, somebody (myself) expresses a belief in something rather absurd. The goal of the game is to try to convince me to give up this belief.
The rules for myself are that I cannot simply disagree, I have to give a reason and defend this belief. Also, I must behave as if a rational person in all other respects, but I can invent justifications to defend this belief. Basically, I want to hold onto this believe no matter what but will have to listen to reason and take into account everyone's arguments.
=======START====== Friends, I found a magic pinecone last week. It is the best thing that has ever happened to me! It has already brought me so much luck and has cured me of the flu! I make sure to sleep with it under my pillow every night so that its powers can have their effect. I'll tell you more about it some other time. See you shortly.

Actually, it is slightly different. Since it is an RPG, tests can be proposed. ie: you can ask to borrow the magic pinecone and see if it works for you, and make up the result. You can assume the Magic Pinecone does not work, (but of course might work sometimes by chance). Unlike the mighty Goldfish. Sorry, I forgot to mention this in the initial post.

Alright, sounds fun.
Do you believe your pinecone to be omnipotent? Used for good or evil? A being unto itself or at the mercy of its controller?

actually, let me rephrase that earlier post. Please ask your magic pinecone the questions that I just asked you, and give me it's result.

Well, if we're actually doing this... Please cite specific examples of the luck the magic pinecone brought you. (Wow...there just aren't any words for how silly that inquiry sounds. :

Aw, jeez. What I am thinking is... if someone believes something that we think is wrong, while is the automatic reflection to disabuse them of it?
I mean, suppose the magic pinecone is in the possession of a kid whose parent just died. He is being creative in coping with loss. Does it really make sense to try to talk him out of it?
Which brings to mind Maverick's question in another thread... about proselytizing. I think if a person is showing signs that a certain belief is harmful to themselves or another, then it's time to step in. Or if a person is themselves interested in comparing their beliefs with others, and debating. But if they are not, and if their beliefs help them rather than hinder them, then leave well enough alone... who are you, to think you can rob people of cherished beliefs and not carry responsibility for the consequences?

I get the feeling that the Pinecone will only work if you have faith in it . At any rate if your done with it may I borrow it? I want to see if it will help me win the Lottery ;D.

I believe that the magic pinecone has killed its owner. That should be proof enough that it doesn't work.
