I haven't been on this board in a while, but I have an atheism-related connumdrum that I though you guys could help me with. I've been taking my son William (yes, I have a son, it has been a long time hasn't it?) to Mother Goose class at our local Early Years Centre. It's a free program where Moms learn songs and rhymes and sing them with our babies. It's a good time, nice way to meet other Moms and my son seems to like it.
My problem is with a new version of Rockabye Baby that they taught us last class. Instead of babies falling from trees, we now have more schmarmy lyrics. Including stating that baby is "an angel" "sent from above".
Unless we're talking about the trip down my birth canal, my child was not sent from above. Singing the song made me feel uncomfortable.
So, am I over-reacting, or should I say something?

Okay so I told them. I didn't make a big hooplah or anything, that's not my style. Just mentioned it quietly before class. She said "I never thought about it that way" and just happened to have another version of rockabye baby up her sleeve. The group wasn't told why the song was changed, which was cool with me (not exactly the forum for theological discussion).
Anyone else have similar experiences?

i dont have any kids. but i think you did the right thing. i take it that where you go isn't a church or over religious place. that is hard to find where i live, tennessee. most daycares are church based. hate to imply things but have some people changed the way they treat you now that you said that? hope not.

oh and congrats on the child. maybe he will be the first atheist president. My son can't be president. He's Canadian! Since only the teacher of the class knows why the song was changed, noone else knows that I'm an atheist so noone treats me differently. I don't know if they would or not. In my talk with teacher, she told me that they have a lot of trouble around Christmas time because you want to sing Christmas Carols but you don't want to exclude other faiths. Also she told me about one time they had a version of Humpty Dumpty that went "Humpty Dumpty sat on a pickle" and one woman complained that it sounded like...well, you know. The point is she's all about being accomodating. I suppose I should have expected that from a government institution, but you never know how individual people are going to react. I am so glad I don't live in Bible Belt, USA. That must be so awful.
