Hey, I'm New Here and..... See I dont belive in any gods or anything like that normally that would be considerd atheism. The only thing is I DO belive in ghosts. I've searched almost everywhere to find out what that would be called, IS it a form of atheism? THANK YOU ;D

If you answered no, then you meet the criteria to be an atheist. 2) Do you positively assert (a)"There is/are no god(s)." or do you tentatively assert (b)"There is no evidence at this time to conclude god(s) exist." If you answered yes to "a", you may be a strong or gnostic atheist. If you answered yes to "b", you may be a weak or agnostic atheist.

Hi buffy, I would agree with solidsquid. The only things that you dont have to believe in to be atheist are gods. With my travels through various forums I've become aware of a few atheists that believe in ghosts. Personally I dont believe in them anymore but I did in the past. You seem quite sure in your belief, what experience have you had with ghosts?

what crazy shit have you seen?
The closest I've been to what I would call "paranormal" Is one time me and my best friend were walking through this field and we were just talking. Then suddenly this feeling came through me it was bizarre, it felt like something passed through me and had left this feeling in me that was kinda like that feeling you get when your just starting to fall asleep and suddenly think your falling. You know that moment of terror followed by the alertness. Well I turned round to tell my friend but he had just turned to face me and said "did you just feel that?" It really freaked us both out. I still can't explain it.

My roommate gave me information regarding a house she claimed to be haunted by experiences she and a friend had when they were teenagers. I won't get into what they claim happened. (It's pretty far out Amittyville stuff)
A group of friends and I investigated the house with cameras, a thermometer and a tape recorder. The camera and tape recorder didn't catch a whole lot but the thermometer drastically changed as it went from room to room, often not showing the temperature it previously had when it returned to an earlier room.
With the exception of one stupid ass who ruined the experience, several of us did notice odd events. Several of us found something unusual about the room at the top of the stairs. One person claimed that he saw the floor ripple like water when he stepped on it.
Downstairs, we turned off the lights and the entire first floor was pitch black. After talking for about 10 minutes in the darkness, we noticed a peculiar green light radiating from this section of wall we had agreed was suspicious earlier. It was ignored at first but then began to grow slowly and expand to cover almost the entire section of the wall. We looked for a source for the light but could find nothing that would make that kind of display on the wall. There were no cars driving by or anything.
Finally, I turned on the flash light and (yes, this will sound insane) I saw the wall bulging out and cave back in as the flashlight beam hit it.
Approximately two seconds later I yelled, "Zoinks! Let's get outta here, Scoob!" and we ran like pussies.

Thats pretty creepy!
The sceptic in me would say that it was your eyes playing tricks on you because of the dark. But In the end I wasnt there so who knows? But the biggest problem I have in believing in ghosts is the fact that I cant think of a mechanism for them to exist. To take your example, what the fuck would make a wall give off green light, warp and become photosensitive?

Trust me, I'm the biggest skeptic concerning what I saw. I'm still replaying it in my head trying to figure out the illusion.
I would say that the existence of ghosts would be more feasible than the existence of God. I doubt ghosts are "spirits" in the religious definition of the word and I'm not entirely sure if they really have anything to do with the dead.
There are other incidents I've been around to experience that still blow my mind. I don't want to sit here and tell ghost stories all day but the evidence I've gathered on my own tips the scales in favor of the existence of ghosts for me.
I'm still not going to break down and say I fully believe in them but it's hard to take a neutral stand when you've experienced as many events that I would classify as paranormal as I have.

so basicly.. you are saying that i am still an athiest? beacuse i heard from a friend that it was called something else.. The only criteria for being titled an atheist is the lack of belief in god(s). That's it. Now, many atheists have other traits such as being skeptical to supernatural claims and such but this is not integral to the definition especially since many non-atheists share this trait as well.

I think you qualify. While I can't say that I believe in ghosts, my girlfriend does to some extent (odd personal experience) and she still considers herself very much an atheist.

I doubt ghosts are "spirits" in the religious definition of the word and I'm not entirely sure if they really have anything to do with the dead. I like that point of view. It seems plausable that there is some field of energy that effects things here on earth that has yet to be discovered. I guess I'd never given much thought to that possibility.

so basicly.. you are saying that i am still an athiest? beacuse i heard from a friend that it was called something else.. Yes, but you should bare in mind that "atheist" isn't the do all and end all label that people use. For example Buddhism is atheistic in nature but Buddhists don’t go around calling themselves atheist, they consider themselves Buddhists because their personal philosophy is what defines them; not their lack of belief in god(s). The same can be said about secular humanists and certain Satanists. I personally just call myself atheist because I don’t know of any philosophy that applies to me yet. Secular humanism seems to idealistic and Satanism is cheesy. Buddhism is something I am currently looking at. I doubt it will fit but there are definitely some aspects of it I’ll be keeping. Iestyn
