Hey thanks for the gutenberg link, I had almost forgotten about it. How's that going by the way? Here's a link to the main listing for Dante, Alighieri (1265-1321) on Project Gutenberg. [Off Topic] I owe everyone here an apology for not being around as often as I should ... I am making a greater effort to be here more often. Project Gutenberg is keeping me VERY busy. I'm now providing content and project managing books for the US and European Distributed Proofreaders, as well as assisting in the preparation for a Canadian site. I currently have over 200 books in various stages of completion. I have acquired a huge collection of Evolution books, including books by Weismann, Romanes, Wallace, Hæckel and Spencer. Darwin Day 2006 might represent 16+ authors, 3 languages (English, French and German) and various topics relating to Natural Science, including a book on ethics. One of my favourite books, Bible Myths and Their Parallel in Other Religions is in its final stage of proofreading and will then be post-processed into a plain text and html version of the book. Thirty Years in Hell; or From the Darkness to the Light (an anti-Catholicism book written by an ex-priest turned protestant) is also in its final stages. I've decided to focus my energies into a few topics ... anthropology, archæology, comparitive religions, natural science (including theistic concepts of the origins) and philosophy. When I get a bit of time, I'll update the Project Gutenberg thread and my website pages. There are a lot of books in progress and recent additions to the collection that may be of interest to the members here. [/Off Topic]

Well, this place is hoppin! Anyway, about fear and god and such: My personal opinion is that people cannot possibly think that they will have no glorious afterlife - they wouldn't make it in this world. It's too full of chaos for them - and plus, why would they work so hard in life if they didn't get a reward at the end, right? That's only one of my theories. I have a couple, so another theory is that fear in general controls them. It's like that old game... Russian Roulette... where a gun is loaded with blank bullets and real ones - chance makes up the game. Now, I'm figuring this: What happens if there really is a god? Wouldn't it be better to just kinda follow the lead with everyone else, so that you get the goodies at the end, too? And if there isn't a god, who cares? Cause at least in life, no one shunned you... you were a good little Christian/Catholic whatever... theist. So either way, it works for them. However, not for us. We stand true to our word and we get shunned, punished for it. I hate this world. LOL. Or maybe people are just bluntly stupid? Sure, bring me proof that a god exists, and if the proof is valid, I'll be more than happy to follow the crowd... jump on the bandwagon. Certainly. haha. Yea right.

Cause at least in life, no one shunned you... you were a good little Christian/Catholic whatever... theist. So either way, it works for them. This "take the safe route" was most famously proposed by Blaise Pascal and known widely as Pascal's Wager. He set it up in a simple matrix and concluded it is the safest bet to believe in a god. However, over the years people have shown the many holes in this logic time and time again. For brevity, I'll simply toss up some links if you're interested: plato.stanford.edu/entries/pascal-wager/www.geocities.com/paulntobin/www.iep.utm.edu/p/pasc-wag.htm

Solidsquid, Thanks for the info about Pascal's Wager. I didn't realize there was a name to it. Personally, I wouldn't jump on the bandwagon.... I was just wondering if maybe that's what a couple theists think? Join and let live. I don't know. Frankly, I think they need to get a life.
Sorry, on a personal note, I know this is random: But if anybody likes rock, check out the band "American Devils". They are surprisingly good. Normally, local bands and the such are trash. But they're really good. They actually remind me of Breaking Benjamin - but they just aren't as well known. Check out American Devils.com
Anyway, just another random question: Does anyone talk in the chatroom anymore? Sure it's been 6 months to a year since I've been on, but..... Oh well, just wondering.

You should totally go to the chat room! Or go to Infidelguy.com and go to the chat room there. It just seems that not a whole lot of people get on this chat room anymore... it's weird. but oh well.

I prefer messageboards far and beyond chatrooms.
