Enuffalready: I'm not saying that the idea sounds glamorous to me. However, the way I see it, this child has come into being through no fault of its own, and I think that I would probably want to carry it to term and see that it has a life of its own somewhere else. After all, it would carry half of my own genes; I'd likely feel some obligation to it. But, again, I can't say for certain, since (thankfully) I am not/have not been in that situation. I suppose I rationalize it by saying that even though the father did an awful, unforgivable thing, that the child is not necessarily going to turn out the same way, and deserves a chance to live. Then again, if I were to look at it logically, I might feel a more practical obligation to go through with an abortion. By denying the offspring of the rapist to live, I would help ensure that this is not an effective way of passing on one's genes. I don't know any statistics on whether children of rapists are likely to become rapists themselves, but at least I would feel some sort of bizzare justice had been served. Cool, I agree totally that one can never fully know how they would react unless put in the position. But it is certainly interesting to see how people think they might handle it.

This misses the point. The question was not whether a woman should be allowed to have an abortion, it's about whether an individual would have one. This comment is a political knee-jerk. I would take all reasonable precautions to not become pregnant unless I was prepared to have and parent the child. If, through unreasonable misfortune, I was made pregnant, I would seek an abortion. I certainly would not be promiscuous or reckless. You missed my reply to another who questioned that response: "If I was in a financial or ideological position where I felt having a child would not be in my best interest, then yes, I would have an abortion."

I didn't miss it. I just decided to point out the knee-jerk, because generally people knee-jerk far too often.

I would have one if I needed it. I see nothing wrong with it until the child is born.
