Author: Daniel Quinn Publisher: Bantam/Turner Pages: 263
I first learned of this book when I found out that it had influenced Pearl Jam during the creation of their album "Yield." (Big Pearl Jam fan)
I found it very interesting and well worth the time I spent reading it. It's not too long and the writing style allows you to read it with ease.
Now, normally I would go in depth about the book but most of you have probably either read it or heard all about it so I'll spare you the details.
Plus I'm freaking lazy.

hmm it reminds me of moby dick and matilda for some reason....any correlation? No. Alright, you talked me into it. The story centers around a man who answers a mysterious ad in the personals section which reads: TEACHER SEEKS PUPIL Must have an earnest desire to save the world. Apply in person. The teacher turns out to be a hyper-intelligent, telepathic gorilla (Crazy, yes. But it's not made that big a deal in the book; so seventy pages aren't spent describing the narrator's amazement that he's talking to an ape) named Ishamel who reveals the lies of our "mother culture" to the narrator. He also goes into great detail about the fact that our planet is in grave danger simply because of the way modern man perceives himself in the grand scheme of things. At this point in our history it's obvious to anyone who has ever looked out of a window that we're kicking our planet's ass. That's not a secret to anyone. The beauty of this book is that Ishamel uses much more subtle, clever and historical references to delve deeper and point out just how sinister and misguided civilized man has grown without being aware of it.
