written by Jhumpa Lahiri, her first novel published by Mariner Books; Houghton Mifflin companies winner of pulitzer prize for fiction
this is a collection of 9 short stories. each story makes you feel you are with these characters from India, socially and geographically dislocated. a picture of immigrant life i would never have imagined. one of the reviews notes the author illuminates the meaning of brief relationships--excellent way to describe each story. there is variety in the age of main characters, and the circumstances of each life. the 3rd story in the series is the one the book title comes from Interpretor Of Maladies. this story is about a family of four americans visiting their parents native land of india, and a sight-seeing tour they embark on. the tour guide is also a part-time interpreter in a local doctors office. the story follows the relationship evolving between the family and the guide., from the guides perspective. hillarious but sad, and rich with indian cultural history.
