I think history makes it pretty clear that someone named Jesus (or an alternate spelling) lived in Nazareth at about that time. I can't site any sources on the matter, but if you look around I'm sure they are there. That being said, I personally believe Jesus was:
A. One of many people of that time who tried to gain support for their personal morals by "preaching" them. I put 'preaching' in quotes, because it implies religion, and I think that the Jesus of this theory was not interested in the Church at all and was mistakenly deified.
B. A seriously delusional person who thought he was the Son of God and all that.
C. A normal dude whose death was used as a symbol with which the corrupt church and government could be attacked. (Think Terri Shiavo).

Well according to the story he asked God if there was any other way but to be crucified. I suppose he was waiting for a sign that didn't appear. Then on the cross at the end he says "My God, why do you forsake me?" It sounds like he was waiting to be saved.
No, we are told, God looked away because he couldn't stand to watch the suffering. This is just a stupid ploy to humanise God when obviously he doesn't care a whit about human life. (I'll use my standard analogy here:) I wonder if he looks away when tsunamis strike hotels or planes fly into buildings.
