Well last night my "in laws" came over and visited for awhile. Believe it or not we are all good friends. We got started on some religious things and I started to pick their brains and them mine on our stand on god. This went well for maybe 45 Min's then they started to get peeved at me when they got frustrated. It got so bad that her dad went outside several times to "think". They did not want to hear what I had to say at all. It was so funny to me cause I knew more about their faith then they did. In the end they changed the subject and I followed the lead in the name of family peace. Any other Atheists have family issues such as this.

They did not want to hear what I had to say at all. Well duh. Yep. Your scenario sounds typical. It's little different than telling someone that their loving father was a cold blooded murderer who put them through college by stealing from terminally ill children. You hit the nail on the head when you said they didn't want to hear what you had to say. If you came in there with wrong facts like stop signs are green and mice carry cellphones then you would've gotten a much different reaction. Instead you told them something they already know deep in their mind that they don't want to face.

What were you telling them anyway? That you are right and they are wrong. That never goes down well.

What were you telling them anyway? That you are right and they are wrong. That never goes down well. Nahh, I respect their stand on god and them mine but it's was hard for them to listen to what I had to say about it. Their minds are not open like some of ours. One day that may change. I look at it this way. I'm bombarded by gods lies everyday, tv,radio, churches, people coming to my door etc.. So why should I not tell it like I think it is??? Not that I do that all the time but when I do, they could at lest try to hear what I am saying.

In saying you think differently, you are saying that you think their opinion is wrong. If you thought it was right, you would think the same surely.
By expecting them to hear what you are saying, you are expecting them to consider that they are wrong. But they can't. To get into heaven they must 'believe'. Their belief isn't strong if they listen to what you are saying.

A few weeks ago, my fiance and I were traveling through California and we stayed with some of my family (a 2nd cousin) in L.A. My cousin and her husband are VERY religious and I had a pretty good feeling that religion was going to come up. The last time I saw these people I told them that I was "between churches". Sure enough my cousin's husband asked me if I had found a church to attend. I decided not to lie this time and told him that I know longer go to church because I don't really believe anymore. Well, he just didn't understand this. He couldn't understand how I would be so cavalier with my own soul. He mentioned that there were so many reasons to believe given fulfilled prophecy and all. I kind of just sat there and listened to what he said. It was a monolog not a discussion. I put a stop to it by saying that if God wants me back he can always cause me to believe again. He seemed somewhat satisfied with that and dropped it.

I don't talk religion with anyone in my family because they are all catholic. Most of my family doesn't even know I am an Atheist; they never ask so I don't feel the need to tell them.
