I recently had a situation where my avatar disappeared ... the site that I nabbed it from had reached their monthly max for bandwidth and their page was temporarily down. As a result the board couldn't display my avatar ... so, I came up with a solution and I want to pass this offer on to anyone else who is using a custom avatar that is hosted on an external site... [/li][li] Send me your image file via E-mail. [/li][li] Include your screen name in your message. [/li][li] I will upload the image to my site and PM you the link that you should put on your profile page.

What you did is called direct linking and a lot of website owners don't like that because when you direct link, it causes them to loose bandwidth that they paid for. It's like stealing money from them. It's the worst thing someone can do. But if it comes from a free service provider, then it wouldn't matter because they're not paying for it. What you also can do is upload the avatar on a free service provider that allows direct linking. For instance, I use angelfire.com, but they do have some rules against this sort of thing. If you don't have a web page up in 28 days, then they'll close your account. But it takes a long time for them to realize you don't have a homepage, and they may never find out anyway.

The offer I am making is to host the avatars of the Ath/Anon members on my website. I have an abundant supply of bandwidth right now, so I have no issue with supplying URLs for our members to ensure that their avatars are working.
The site I was originally linking to was a free site (angelfire) but even those have bandwidth limitations. That's why I'm now storing all of my avatars on my site.

Yeah, I'm talking about those people who steal the bandwidth from other domains and they don't even know that they're doing it. I've visited message boards where people direct link avatars, but they don't know that they are direct linking. I thought it would be a good idea to say that here so those who don't know about it would know.
You're right, Angelfire does a limited bandwidth, but one or two avatars wouldn't use it all (at least I don't think it does).
Edit: Oh, wait, is this a site you made on Angelfire? Is that why all the bandwidth was used?

My site is hosted by Yahoo, but I have quite a lot of banwidth (that's what you get for actually paying for the service).
The angelfire site I was reffering to is now gone. I managed to get my avatars from them before they went down. I was direct-linking (for a short period, until I had my site up & running), but the instructions they had on their site indicated that they allowed people to direct-link.
Either way, it's a moot point now. Anyone who is currently direct linking for their avatars on this message board, please email me a copy of your desired avatar and I will host it for you.
