Mark T. White letter: It's atheist-bashing season at ForumClick here to read the original article The Forum Published Friday, May 14, 2004It must be time for The Forum's annual atheist-bashing festival. According to Kathleen Wu (letter, April 19), atheists spend too much time thinking about "God." After complaining about atheists' supposed obsession with God, she predictably brings up the tired, lame, obtuse claim that atheists are actually mad at God because of some misfortune or rejection that has severely affected their life. (I was surprised she didn't accuse atheists of being Satan worshipping, homosexual pedophiles as well. It is usually part of the equation.)
Wu can rest assured that jealous revolt, egotism or rejection have little if anything to do with being an atheist. The majority of atheists in this country are themselves former Christians who have chosen the path of logic, reason and scientific evidence rather than blind faith. Christians with the mind set similar to Wu seem to have great difficulty in accepting the fact that everyone does not think the same way that she and her herd do.
As for atheists spending too much time thinking about God, with the ongoing controversies surrounding religion and politics as well as having a president with a "messiah complex," "God" is rather difficult, if not impossible, to avoid. Especially since the release of Mel Gibson's "snuff movie."
