I was having a talk with a guy on my job site yesterday and he was talking about BF. He went on about this show he seen tv. So I ask him if he believed in BF, he said no not really. Ok, then I ask him if he believed in god, he says yes. I say have you every seen god. Of course the answer in no. How about BF,no again. He said the bible is enough for him. I said what about all the books and tv shows (that he was just telling me bout mind you)about BF isn't that enough then?No he says. What makes one book more believable than another I ask him. Faith he says. FAITH can you believe that crap, that was the best he could come up with. Well, I just had to walk away laughing. Thought I'd share.

The desire to believe something can be so strong that all rational thought just goes out the window. I would rather know a cold, hard truth than hold on to a warm, fuzzy belief, but it seems I am very much in the minority.

Interesting point twobird. I wonder though how is it that a rational human being would choose to delude it's self? And if you conceed that the formost aspect of humanity lies in the ability to rationalize a problem, then wouldent you have to then conceed that a person who chooses to abandon their rationality can only be considered human on biological species of sapian sapian? If that is true I wonder how much these people can realy be trusted to carry buisness with a logical rational view?
Oh and I havent ever read your posts before welcome EclipsedSun feel free to question me any time.

Faith my ass! Fear is more like it. Unlike Big Foot, it is drilled in their heads that there will be a negative consequence for not believing it. Faith is purely subjective.

Alright Deano but is there any more to your point? My two cents not good enough for you? I'll just make this my last post here at AA so I won't annoy you again with my small talk.

It was not my intention to insult you Deano, but this is a discussion board and I was wondering if you had any thing to add that might be helpful to a clearer understanding of the basic point.

Faith means: belief that does not rest on logical proof or material evidence.* This is just an example of circular logic religions often present us with. -Why do you believe in God even though there is no logical proof or material evidence? -Well because I have a belief that does not rest on logical proof or material evidence.
There are people (and don't ask me to name any) who genuinely believe that bigfoot exists, this is just like those who have faith in God. The difference is bigfoot enthusiasts know that the burden of truth falls on them to prove bigfoot exists, hence they go out and take a lot of blurry snapshots.
* To be fair, to Christians Faith actually means to trust God without question, and thus not need any evidence. As an atheist, this seems like the same thing to me.
