I'm M, and I'm a sahm to four girls under 7. I recently discovered that not only did I not believe as my southern-baptist family does, I am in fact an atheist. I am in awe of how much I have grown. All of my life, someone has dragged me to church while I sat there and wondered why I didn't believe what everyone else did. It took a long time to realize that I didn't HAVE to!!
As far as current events, I am pretty much disgusted by the marketing effort of Mel Gibsons 'Passion'. IMO, it's gone way overboard. (If I were a christian I'd be offended by coffee mugs with rusty nails on them, but that's another debate...)
I live in the south and cannot seem to find anyone who agrees with me on this. Thank goodness for the internet!
I hope to chat with you all soon, time permitting of course, with four little ones underfoot.
-M ;D

Welcome to the board, secularmama!
I, too, am disgusted by the attention Mel's movie is getting. I'm more disgusted by the movie itself, having had the displeasure of actually seeing it!
Again, welcome!

Welcome secularmama! I have not yet seen the Passion but some of our other members have (and they're discussing it here). I assure you, there are other athesits in the south. Two examples immediately come to mind: The Infidel Guy who lives in Atlanta, Georgia and Blair Scott, Director of Alabama Atheist. Welcome again to the message board. If you need anything in the future, feel free to drop me a PM.

Another individual who's a southerner and an atheist is Lawrence Darby (and his whole crew) of Atheist Law Center, Inc. Darby was the former Vice President of American Atheists.

I live in the south and cannot seem to find anyone who agrees with me on this. Let's not forgot the most prominent southern atheist of them all...ME! I may not be the founder of any fancy organization, but as it is I would never want to be a part of a club that would have a person like me as a member, much less be the founder of one. But seriously, southern atheists aren't that hard to find, but it does seem more likely that you'll find them on an University campus than anywhere else. I've come in contact with a relatively large number at my school which is known for it's large religous community. So maybe you're just not looking in the right places? But like you said, thank goodness for the internet.
