Just doing a search today (Christmas day of all days) and found this. There is a very organised Humanist movement here in the UK and Scotland which I really must get around to joining sometime. I've never been a great fan of organised religion or any belief system but have never knocked anyone for having a belief in some kind of spiritual entity. Whatever gets you through life. Whenever people question me as to whether or not an atheist can celebrate Christmas I always reply with, "Technically yes!" Christmas didn't start out as a Christian celebration, but as a way of celebrating the passing of the winter solstice. Over thousands of years it has since been adapted, hi-jacked and commercialised by all sorts of different groups. Lets face it where does Santa come into it? If you say Saint Nicholas, weren't his colours originally green and white, the red and white coming through commercialisation by a global soft drinks company! Anyway, I have other views and thought that I'll probably add to the various threads as I browse through them. Particularly the one on the bible, never believe anything that wasn't written first hand by an eye witness I always say.

Welcome to the board, simon!
Happy Festivus ... I'm off to my mother's house for a huge dinner, displays of commercialism and weeks of wishing I hadn't eaten so much ...
If you have any questions or concerns, please PM one of the mods (myself included). In the meantime, make yourself at home. There is eggnog in the fridge, rum at the bar, etc etc etc...

Hi Simon
I hope you had a fun festive season. I think atheists can celebrate xmas....I like any excuse to have a party. Its not like I go to church or anything, or lead anyone into thinking i am celebrating the reigious aspects at all. I think its a great chance to make time to spend with family, and generally enjoy yourself. I think any time and any celebration would suit this purpose but they give us 2 bank holiday days together which makes it more convenient, and then a week after another bank holiday on new year. I think it would be a waste if we didnt enjoy it coz we arent religious!
Where abouts in the UK are you? I'm sure there is a humanist socity group near you, or you could check out meetup.com to see if there is an atheist group near you.
