I have always found the story of Jesus and his life to be fascinating, even though I never really believed it. But, living in that time must have been a magnificent experience, since may things were not, as they are today, "illegal." And just recently I have read a book that describes a trip on mushrooms. I have only tried these once (and I [glow=red,2,300]highly[/glow] recommend using them at least once), and this book described them in the best manner that it could. Then, the author went on to say how he thought religion was started by someone using these mushrooms, and how people from ancient times said they were the one thing that could change a person forever. Now, have any of you tried these? And do any of you think that this author may be correct? I believe that he just may be on the right track.

Is that Timothy Leary's "The Doors of Perception"? If not, what book are you referring to?

No, I think he is on the wrong track, whomever this author may be. And yes, I have tried psilocybe mushrooms. These, and all other mind altering drugs produce states of mind that are abnormal. I am reminded of Marx`s statement, religion is the opiate of the masses. One should not confuse drug induced psychosis, with enlightend thinking, although I do beleive any altered state of the human mind to be worthy of study. I hope to post more further.

I don`t think religion was started by someone on a mushroom trip, or by any one person for that matter, although there have been many sects/cults started by one person. I think there are perhaps some fringe religions where we may find drugs being used as a portal to a "enhanced" religious state. I find it interesting to have lately discovered that Voodoo is being named as the main religion in Haiti, although I`m not sure if Voodoo practice includes drug use.
In my previous post I stated that all mind altering drugs produce states of mind that are abnormal, but I neglected to realize that some drugs may be used with the purpose to restore normality.

Why yes yaw, it is a Tom Leary book, the title is, "The High Priest." And Hilly, it seems like you may be misunderstanding me. When you think of using drugs, think about it before anyone ever though of Christ as the son of God. There was a book of Jesus's sayings of his time, "Steven's Gospels" was the name I believe. It was written before anyone thought of Jesus as being holy. It said that he never referred to himself as the savior. it had other sayings of jesus and it was describing him as a normal person. I just found that interesting, and thought i may sare it with you. Although, I may still be incorrect.
