President Bush has said, "freedom is God’s gift to all people" (in several references to defending the action in Iraq).
From a theist's perspective, or more specifically from a Christian's perspective, what actually supports this statement?
I don't doubt that people feel this way, but other than feelings, what biblical reference or church doctrine portrays God in this manner?
Or do you perhaps disagree with the statement?
(I should add, that I do not understand where one could get the impression that God intends for all human beings to live in freedom as defined by our standards, albeit it is a nice "spiritual" thought.)

As usual, Bush was spouting BS. I get the general biblical impression that God is pro-slavery, anti- women's rights, and homophobic. Sounds to me like He doesn't want everyone to be free, but he might actually be Pro-invading-small-countries-for-no-reason-other-than-because-we-can.

I know what you/I think... ;D

In giving us free will, God gave us freedom.

If God made us and the world, it made the world as it is. We are free to choose how we act, so if God made it that way it is from God.
It is a mistake to call it a gift though. Calling it a gift implies good intentions by God. No God with good intentions would make the world as it is. No God would act as a robber, saying 'worship me or burn' as a robber would say 'give me your money or die'.
Calling our life a gift from God is dishonest. When imprisoned without hope of escape, do you refer to the scraps of food thrown into your cell as gifts?

In giving us free will, God gave us freedom. You are speaking collectively. Perhaps society has the potential for freedom as you imply. But GWB says that freedom is God's gift to all people - implying each one individually. Clearly not all men are free, nor have they been even by Biblical standards. My point is where does God's word support GWB's statement?

Exodus 21:7 And if a man sell his daughter to be a maidservant, she shall not go out as the menservants do.
Genesis 24:35 And the LORD hath blessed my master greatly; and he is become great: and he hath given him flocks, and herds, and silver, and gold, and menservants, and maidservants, and camels, and asses.
God gives slaves away!
22:3 If the sun be risen upon him, there shall be blood shed for him; for he should make full restitution; if he have nothing, then he shall be sold for his theft.
Its ok to sell people.
Well there goes that idea that its gods gift.
