A question just came to me. Why if God is supposedly all loveing why are we (acording to the bible and any religious person I have ever met) supposed to fear him. I mean at all. If he is SO GREAT why dont we all want notheing but to love him?

Have you seen "dogma"? Fire and sulfer *shudders* He was a scary rather invocing guy. Punishment for evil like soddom and gamora(spelling?), flooding, sins, deathtime in hell, what isn't to fear?
But hey that is just fairy stories to me ;D

Yes perhaps I left it too open ended. What I mean is why do they say that we should love God and then tell us that he should be feared

oh okay that makes more sense. I can't really answer that but it may have been the birth of the love/hate relationships.....

I think it's said somewhere that fear is the opposite of love.

I don't think you can do both, if that answers it.
Reason and religion do not go together, which is why they demand both fear and love, two things that are impossible to feel at the same time.

So in other words your answer is that the reason is becasue religion is inheritly unreasonable? And that the reason is that they want people to join but want controle at the same time?

I don't know poeple that abused by spouses still love them and fear them....they have both. Does that mean God is abusive? I don't think that they feel both. If you fear someone, you don't want them around you because you are not comfortable in their company. If you love someone, you enjoy being in their company and actually like having them around. Maybe after the person is dead, or the victim knows that the person cannot harm them anymore, is when they can actually feel love for them. So in other words your answer is that the reason is becasue religion is inheritly unreasonable? And that the reason is that they want people to join but want controle at the same time? Most religions use fear to control because it's easier to make people conform with fear than with love. They seem to say "Join us, believe what we tell you, or you will be in horrible pain". Most religions seem to threaten people into submission rather than letting them chose their own path. If a religion is truly about love, it would not make it's followers live in fear.
