I personally loved this pledge, and posted it over in Civil Liberties at About.com.
Most people liked it, but I also was told (by two people) to get out of the country. Haha, I AM out of the country. What makes them assume I am in America? And what makes me not allowed to criticize it--I mean REALLY criticize it? What makes *America* beyond criticism? Why am I supposed to think it's sacred--especially since I am an atheist? It's OK to pick apart individuals, make slam books in school, critique companies, movies, EVERYTHING but a line in the sand we call "America?" See, everything behind THIS line is GREAT, everything beyond that line is so-so. Even if some dirt gets brushed over the line, the dirt is better because it's on this side of the border.
Sorry. Those distinctions are arbitrary. Any one of us (Americans) (or Canadians for that matter) could have been born in Thailand or Bangladesh. At that point, no one gives a flying crap if you love Bangladesh anymore. Being patriotic suddenly isn't that big of a deal. In THAT case, patriotism isn't an important moral. But if you're an American, you're forced to learn it in school. You're forced to pretend you love the concept "my country" by reciting and signing oaths. I think it's insane.

We love poking fun at Americans AND laughing at ourselves. We also love it when our country gets mentioned in an american movie.

The only thing that happened here on July Fourth was that Greece won the Euro cup, and there was a parade for it.

We love poking fun at Americans AND laughing at ourselves. Jen, have you seen the movie "Canadian Bacon"? If you like "poking fun at ourselves", you'll probably love that movie.
