I just wanted to know, what everybody else thought was the funniest book they have ever read.
I put forward the Hitch Hikers Guide To The Galaxy, by Douglas Adams, which needs no introduction in the UK, although I'm not sure how popular it is in America.
Basically, it's about a human, Arthur Dent, who escapes from the Earth when it's destroyed, he then goes on a journey around the galaxy getting into all sorts of compromising situations. I like it because of the clever way that Adams turns logic and science on its head to make brilliantly funny points.

I would add to your Hitchhiker's selection the Dirk Gently books. I was in stitches the whole time I was reading "The Great Tea Time of the Soul"
I would also like to add the DiscWorld series by Terry Pratchett, if you are into satire. "Guards! Guards!" had me in tears and pain from laughing so much!

I second hitchhikers (I'm in the process of reading Life, the Universe, and Everything), and also
Interstellar Pig gets an honorable mention for not being the funniest book, but having the most hillarious closing line in history.

HHGG is one of the best books I've ever read, although I like the earlier books much better than those later in the series. I'd say it's pretty popular in America, or at least, it is among us nerds ;D I dont know or care about any other social groups' opinions of the book. I simply love it.
