The Trouble With Islam, by Irshad Manji Published by Random House Canada 2003 ISBN0-679-31250-1 I bought this book because of my desire to learn about the religion of Islam and hopefully help me understand those who practice it. Being a atheist I thought a book that would take a critical look at Islam would be interesting, although this book is by no means anti- religious, its author is a devout albeit cautious follower of Islam. Also I am somewhat familiar with the author from her appearances on various television shows. Although this book was written primarily for those who practice the Islam faith, Manji also encourages others to take up her cause. Among her concerns are, anti-Semitism, a lack of equal rights and opportunity for women, and a strict black and white interpretation of the Koran. Manji writes with a strong passion for her religion and clearly is concerned for what she believes is its highjacking by fundamentalists. I think she has taken a lot of heat for this book from other Muslims who view her as a threat and I feel she is very brave for writing it. She has a web site that can be found here, that is well worth a visit. An interview she did with Salman Rushdie can also be found there. She also encourages readers/visitors to e mail her with their views which I did, and received a pleasant response.
