Actualy, I suppose I shouldnt let the record go uncorrected, Yes women are to submit themselves to their husbands and are to respect them. Husbands on the other hand are told to love their wives as Christ loves the church, serving and if need be laying down his life for her. Now if the husband is to serve his wife and possibly sacrifice his life for her, can we really infer that she has less value than the man?
I can only speak for the Christian view, many others treat women pretty bad.

It wasn't always that way. Many native american societies were matrilinial... in that the name followed the women and the men were there to serve them. I don't know how they were impacted with the introduction of Christianity.

wow old thread..now a joke if i remember it correctly i think it goes like this "God may have created man first but everyone has to warm up before they can achieve real greatness, thus came women" or something like that...yeah not sure
But I think not only in religion are women made lower but just in society altogether, some places more than other. I've noticed it more latly the whole women can't really take care of themselves thing...but it kind of a circle, some women are lead to believe the are lower and therefore become so and can't break the stereotype of what they were taught. It's sad really, I choose to not be treated insufferior to men but rather value myself as better....but it really irks me when people don't relise how shovinistic they are being, it's like racism in a way you don't know you are doing it till it's to late to change your ways. Oh well hopfully that will change soon.
