Dear Members of of the atheist network: Greetings! I am a graduate student in sociology who is doing a comparative religion survey. I need some non-believers for a control group by which I can compare primarily buddhists with christians. If you can spare 15 minutes and are 18 yrs or older, I would be very grateful for your help. All information is completely confidential and anonymous. There will be no follow up emails, and you can stop the survey at any time. Here is the link: db.unh.edu/surveys/religiousaffiliation/Thanks very much for your help. I am happy to share results when it's over! Best Wishes, Jill

Dear Members of of the atheist network: For future reference, this is Atheists Anonymous (not the Atheist Network. The Atheist Network can be found here: www.atheistnetwork.com. I'll try to take a look at your survey soon.

I took the survey. One comment I would like to make ... in several of the questions, it refers to religious activites or religious associations. As an atheist, I have no such activites (although I do a lot of community work that is not based on a religious organization). I think there should have been a "Not Applicable" option for several questions, as well as questions related to non-religious volunteer initiatives.

The main reason why I mention this is that it may throw the final analysis off. If a non-believer is answering in the negative (which is what I did), this doesn't give a clear indication. In reality, a non-believer does not become involved in religious endeavours. I feel that the "Not Applicable" option gives a more accurate summary than "Disagree", "Strongly Disagree" or "Never".
It all depends on how you will be sorting the data for analysis. If the atheist responces are being handled completely separate, then you can compensate for the overly negative responces to community endeavors and volunteer initiatives, however, if any of the questions are going to be looked at as an overview of respondants (i.e. x% of respondants spend 0 hours etc...) your outcome may be skewed because of the lack of a neutral option.
There were also some other questions (the ones relating to my 5 closest friends) that I'm not sure how you will use that data. You stated that you are looking at the links between crime and theism (to paraphrase), yet you didn't ask whether the x number of my close friends who committed a crime in the past 12 months are Christians, Muslims, Atheists, whatevers.
Anyways, those are just some observations.

Oh ... another thought just hit me ...
I would like to invite you to join the board, and please share the results with our community when you complete your analysis. I would be interested in the outcome.
