GS (im going to call you that from now on guerrillasaint, less typing)
No religion will save you. That may be why they seem like security blankets to you. If you removed the one true God from your life then all you are trying to do is cope and find some security in an insecure world.
Religion is just an organized why to go about something. Religion isn't God and God isn't religion. He is much bigger than that. The act of saying that there is a God doesn't mean you believe in him. When you believe you have to have trust in him. You have to talk to him. You have to give all of yourself to him. What I am saying sound crazy to you because you haven't tried it. Since you were Christian I trust that you have read the bible, right? If you wish, go to Acts 9:10 when God spoke to Ananias ( the one who went to Saul), Acts 18:9-10 when God talks to Paul( the one that was persecuting the Christians and then became a Christian), Acts 22:6-23 when Paul recalled the times God talked to him. If you "whole heartedly" believed then you should have also believed this.
The idea of God can do many things but knowing him is were the difference is. If you never put you faith in God and you just went through the motions you weren't a true believer. You must step out on faith. If you continue to keep God in the backseat soon you will forget he is back there. Turn around and look at all the life that you have been missing.
So many people think that they are true Christians but they don't put their trust in him. That is what is going to catch a lot of people off guard when judgment day comes along. Some people think that doing things is what will save them. Some people think that if they know there is a God they don't have to do anything else. Both types of people have only gone half way. You have to give your life to him and he will Give you back much more than you ever expected. I guess you can call it an eternal investment
