I came up with this the other day. I was thinking if christians can get time off for a holiday that isn't even acturate to what it should be celebrating, why can't we? I'm refer to christmas in the previous statement, it is soppuse to celebrate the birth of christ but he wasn't born on december 25th, not that i believe, the reason the holiday was invented was to get the peagans to join in and december 25th happens to be one or surrounding one of thier holidays. But enough theology.
The holiday is athemas, pardon spelling it is easier to say then spell, it is a celebration of atheism and takes place december 26th the day after jesus' supposed birth.
Not to be offencive to any theists here it is sorta a joke. except for the history of the holiday that is true.
Please don't hesatite to tell me what you think! ;D ;D

Yes, December 25 was originally the Roman holiday of Saturnalia. Apparently Jesus was born some time in the autumn (September). And as for an atheistic celebration involving shopping on the 26th of December...isn't that Boxing Day?

I don't know, i was saying that the supposed birth of christ would lead to atheism. Like a joke.

My calendar says that's when Kwanzaa starts. But my calendar is really messed up for some reason, it thinks New Years is on December 3. (By the way I am back from my little "vacation" if you can call it that...evil tests...and I'll just be leaving again in a few days...but oh well!) I like your idea. Atheists need holidays too! But we should make it a day in the middle of a week during a working period, so we can take a 3 or 4 day weekend! Muahahaha. And I really like the name, you're right it is easier to say than spell.

I`m always in favour of a holiday ;D I think we would have a hard time selling it though, considering we are in the minority, and some people even consider atheism to be detrimental to society. That being said, we should have our own recurring day to remind the world were here and harmless. Maybe it could be on a Saturday some time in the summer.

I had it be on the 26th becouse that is when jesus was supposedly born, as in after he was born atheism sort of started. It could always be in september if we found out when jesus was born. Not saying atheism is only a disbelief in christianity.

I think having a holiday for non-religious people is not a bad idea. But I don't think such a holiday should be based upon the differences between atheism and theism. That might only fuel hatred of atheism.
I don't know. What does everyone else think?

I've always thought that there should be no holidays (holy daze). I suppose it would be alright to have the nationalistic days set aside and observed, but the remaining days that are currently designated as 'statutory days' should be 'floaters'. Each employee (or student) is guaranteed a certain number of floaters on top of their vacation allowance, which they can take at any time (but they cannot lump them together with other vacation/days). This would allow people to have 'one offs' throughout the year, and the religious people could take their significant days and not be mandated to take the Christian holidays.
I also think that no one should have to work (or go to school) on their birthday or anniversary, if they are married (hey, we married people deserve the extra day!!)

I love the idea. Maybe it could be Darwin's birthday or something?
It also might be a nice gesture to the world if it was christmas-y in the sense that It was centered around ethics. One of the common misconceptions of aethiesm if that since we don't believe in a god, what motivates us to not be self-centered idiots?
just adding my 2 cents

Hey, it's a great idea, but I have a problem with it being right on my birthday. I mean, I have to deal with my birthday being right after Christmas (a nightmare, I tell you!). I don't mind it, but now I have to celebrate two things. I like the idea Griffey said, that it could be in the middle of a non-holiday week so we can have a day off of work or something. But then I agree with those who said that it may never get through because people will not like the idea. Not only that, but atheism is not a religion and many people seem to mistake it as one, and I think a holiday would fuel the myth.
It's a good idea. I just don't think it would work.

Hey if catholics are allowed to take off for good friday why can't take off for a holiday? That would be dicrimatory if they didn't allow it.
Kalena your b-day is the 26th? That would be difficult.
