Some say that it takes "faith" to be an atheist. They are fools.

My name is Gil Gaudia, Ph.D. I usually only include the Ph.D. when arguing with Christians in order to impress them (they never are). My pet complaint is that I've written a helluva good novel about an atheist (fictionalized autiobigraphy) which has only sold a few hundred copies. It's not the money, but the disappointment at not being able to show that atheists are as good (or better) as anyone else. The book is "Outside, Looking In", and is available at www.xlibris.com, or www.Amazon.com and others. Try it. You'll like it.

I hope you stick around and get involved with some discussions. I agree it’s difficult to correlate I.Q. or education level with the fervor of faith (or lack thereof). As a “rapture-ite” once told me “There is no need trying to engage in debate, because the argument would be on two entirely different planes --within divergent spheres.” Any effective card one tries to play in a crooked game is suspect. I’m guilty of dropping my Mensa membership to try to help support a point. I just came off sounding arrogant and “holier than thou” (pun intended, I guess). At any rate, I’ll check out your book, (note free plug via quoting your post above). Welcome again!

Just wanted to say hello to everyone on the board. I guess i became an atheist in my teenage years. it happened pretty much when my mother died. i just couldn't believe a loving god could let something like that happen. i was brought up catholic, but was not pushed to go to church when i was young. as i got older one of my friends brother started to talk to me about Jesus. he was a born again christian. and for a little while i strayed and became one. the whole time though i just couldn't make myself believe. no matter how hard i tried. i still have not told them that i'm back to being an atheist. this is why i went looking for other people just like myself. it's hard being an atheist and not having other people to talk to about your beliefs. everyone i know believes in some kind of god. i found this board by googling atheist message boards. i look forward to posting.

Welcome sealab2021. I understand where you're coming from. I tried the 'open myself to jesus' thing and got nothing more than emptiness. At the time I was in sunday school and about 5 years old. Congrats on not deluding yourself.

Welcome, sealab. I'm in pretty much the same shape as you are. Hang in there! But while you're here, breathe the free air! :-)

Hello, I'm a new member today. (you'll note that I'm not computer literate). But I don't care if you don't. 1) I was an agnostic from about 12 yrs old. And have considered myself an atheist from the age of 22 yrs. 2) I was raised a methodist. ( also dabbled in calvery baptistism.) 3) rejected religious beliefs I've been exposed to primarily because none of it made much sense to me. And things that are done in the name of religion anger me. 4) searched google and found this site. I'm now 57 yrs old and am sure I don't believe in any god. I do, however, hold an interest in psychic mediums. Just not in a religious sense. (no soul type connection). More like an energy source. I'm courious to know if there has ever been an atheist who proclaimed to be a pschic medium. Anybody out there want to take this one? Thanks, zoolinda

Welcome Zoolinda!
If you're looking for an interestign take on 'energy,' have a look at the film What the Bleep Do We Know?.
You should be able to find it at your local video rental place.
Hope you can stick around and get involved!

As to an atheist medium, I don't know. I'm sure there are since the only requirement for atheism is the lack of belief in god(s).

That's my point. All the mediums I've ever heard about profess to have gotten their ability from "god". I wonder if there are any who say "it just happens" and don't bring religion into what they do psychically? Hmmm....

Hey, I'm a newbie here this evening and thought I'd take a stab at the icebreakers... 1. I'm not exactly sure when I lost faith. I was a very happy little xian full of faith and all that crap. Somewhere over the years it all faded as my parents hopped from denomination to denomination on their own sad religious journey. I was a total non-believer by my early teens, completely black-hearted and cynical by 18, and thankfully a little more balanced and happy atheist here at 28. 2. LMAO, where do I begin? I've been from Southern Baptist to Charismatic (my parents living on faith, i.e. no real jobs, starting new churches in England). When we moved back to the states they gradually moved away from the holy roller insanity toward more mainstream religion. We were Disciples of Christ for several years. I went away to college. My parents converted to Orthodox Judaism (I was aghast) for a few years. I dabbled in LDS, actually getting baptised. During the black-hearted years I was a proud Satanist for a year or two. Now I am a rock-solid atheist. ....and xians talk about THEIR difficult journeys to salvation! 3. Again, I don't really know. The older I got from about age 8, the less things like praying and miracles seemed believable. I also had a hard time dealing with my parents' apparent religious difficulties. If they couldn't tell what was right, how could I trust anything? 4. I found this site through a Google search for "atheist message board." I belong to a few other boards, but they mainly consist of people of various religions trying to convert the members and the members getting pissed off. My main problem these days as a single mom is trying to fend off my grandmother's attempts to get my son saved without hurting her feelings.
