1. I was probably in about tenth grade when I decided I was, in fact, an atheist. O'course, I was for a while before that, I just was too wimpy to use the word.
2. I am from a Jewish family, and I actually still consider myself Jewish. Yes, a Jewish Atheist, go figure THAT one out.
3. Christian Creationism. I got into the debate and learned how to use logic better, plus I feel I gained a good understainding of scientific theory. So it was really only a matter of time...
4. Google Search for "Atheists" ;D I've actually been lurking the boards for a while and just got around to registering.

Gatenaben everyone, Well I say why not just delve into this:
1: About the age of 16.
2: Roman Catholic, though my parents are into it they were never overly religious.
3: Long story short 4 suicides of close friends in one year along with various thought and to be honest prayer; all leading back to one thing there is no one up there or if there is they don't care about us. that was longer than I hoped for.
4: I found out about AA from Dragon*of*Heavon

Sorry to hear about your losses RD. I hope time has helped ease the pain. Remember you're an important person. Hang in there, find ways to make others happy and you might be able to put a smile on your face too. Take care, Eugen

Eugen isn't my real name but if I move i may change my name to Eugen. I'm 62. 1.Been an atheist since i was in my teens. 2.Was Lutheran. 3.When I was twelve while in bible class Pastor Bausom told us not to look for proof of god, because we wouldn't find it. He said you had to believe in god on faith. I was young and naive and it never occurred to me to question the existence of god, so this was a real eye opener. Telling us that we had to believe on faith alone made me begin to question and over a period of years and moving and another pastor I finally decided that I was an atheist. I didn't know any atheists, I didn't know that a lot of famous men and some women were agnostic/atheist (I didn't know where the library was, well I really did but you wouldn't believe how small it was.), but despite that I came to that decision. It was just a logical conclusion based on: a. Man made in the image of god? arrogance b. The mean old god of the old testament isn't the same guy the Lutheran church teaches you about. c. So many dumb stories like Noah and the flood, god demanding the stoning of a man who had collected wood on the Sabbath, god ordering genocide of several tribes, etc. d. The thought of kneeling in front of god for eternity and spouting “god is great” ( maybe in heaven they do it in shifts. I've got the 8 to 5!) e. looking up in the sky at night and knowing how insignificant we really are. (that is not to say that we shouldn't be important to each other. Our species should come before all else.) f. there are more 4. I just stumbled in here one day.

Hi Eugen, welcome. I think you are an example to other Christians who might be on the verge of crossing over.
This is true of (surely) all churches, and for me this was the final nail. I postponed reading the Bible because I didn't want to find it unbelievable. Eventually I decided to start at page 1 and read through it. I got about as far as judges and my mind was set. If I had read it sooner, I would have been an atheist sooner. I don't know how Christians can overlook this obvious point.
The crunch points for me were Aaron's sons being killed and God rewarding Phinehas for his zealousy.

1) I don't remember ever not being an Atheist. I remember riding my bike at 6 years old scoffing at all this "God" stuff. 2) Y'know, its something my parents and I never did discuss. They don't go to church, though I think my dad was raised in it. My mom refuses to tell me. 3) Doesn't really apply, though I reject Faith on a daily basis 4) Surfing brought me home!

Hi, I'm a newby. As an intro: I'm a high schooler with tolerant theistic parents, however i live in the mid-west and am almost entirely surrounded by christians who believe in intelligent design or who are busy enough with their work that religion is just showing up at church for baptism and easter.
1) my deconversion took place over a long time, starting when I was about 12 and not resolving to a cynical and unyielding disbelief in god until I was almost 16
2) My parents are Quakers (International Society of Friends for the sticklers) and they go semi-regularly to a local Christian church whose only requirement for membership is taking Christ as your lord and savior publicly.
3) I started my disbelief in the bible when reading it. For a long time i took the bible as a guide if not the true word of the omnipotent. Then I got a better understanding of complex math and decided that to make the laws of physics, god would either have to be a heck of a mathematician to create the universe and all eleven dimensions that are supposed to exist or religious founders just made it all up. I picked the latter and everything makes more sense
4) I found out about this site from just surfing the web
